Odisha/West Bengal: In anticipation of the rapidly intensifying Cyclone Dana, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Coast Guard, and various government agencies are on high alert. With the cyclone expected to hit the coasts of Odisha and West Bengal on Thursday, October 24, 2024, authorities are taking all necessary precautions to minimize damage and safeguard lives.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued severe weather warnings, predicting that Cyclone Dana could bring wind speeds of up to 120 kmph, along with torrential rainfall in several coastal districts of Odisha and West Bengal. Ports, local administrations, and emergency services in these areas have been activated to respond to any potential crisis.
High Alert in Coastal Districts
The IMD has issued warnings for heavy rainfall and strong winds, especially in coastal areas, forecasting the most significant impact in districts such as Puri, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, and Cuttack in Odisha. Similarly, West Bengal’s East Midnapore, West Midnapore, South 24 Parganas, and North 24 Parganas are expected to face the brunt of Cyclone Dana’s fury.
On October 23, the cyclone will begin influencing the weather, bringing rain and wind speeds up to 60 kmph along the coasts of both states. By the night of October 24, these winds will intensify to 120 kmph, with heavy rainfall expected to exceed 30 cm in certain locations.
Ports and Coastal Cities on Alert
Key ports such as Paradip in Odisha and Haldia in West Bengal have been placed on high alert. Maritime operations have been curtailed, and ships have been directed to safer waters. Fishermen and coastal communities have been advised to remain vigilant and avoid going to sea until the cyclone subsides.
Rainfall Predictions and Wind Alerts
The IMD has predicted heavy rain for Kolkata, Howrah, Hooghly, and Purulia in West Bengal, with the storm’s effects likely extending through October 23-25, 2024. Coastal areas, including Balasore, Jajpur, Rayagada, Gajapati, Ganjam, and Kandhamal, are on high alert for possible flash floods and waterlogging.
Disaster Preparedness in Full Swing
In preparation for Cyclone Dana, the NDRF and state disaster response teams have been deployed in vulnerable districts. Emergency shelters are being readied, and relief materials are being stocked. Citizens are urged to follow official advisories, stay indoors during peak storm periods, and cooperate with rescue teams.
IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated that while Cyclone Dana will bring intense rainfall and high winds, proactive disaster management measures are expected to mitigate the worst impacts.
With Cyclone Dana expected to make landfall soon, residents in affected areas are advised to prepare for severe weather conditions. The government has urged people to remain informed through official updates and take shelter if necessary, ensuring safety as Cyclone Dana approaches.
