New Delhi: In a heartbreaking development, India bids farewell to one of its most respected leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh. The former Prime Minister, senior Congress leader, and legendary economist passed away today at the age of 92. He breathed his last at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, where he was admitted earlier in the day following a sudden deterioration in his health.
Dr. Singh had been battling health issues for an extended period. Reports reveal that he was facing severe respiratory challenges and had been admitted to AIIMS multiple times over the past few years. This morning, his condition worsened significantly due to lung infection complications, leading to his hospitalization. Despite the best efforts by a special team of expert doctors, he succumbed during treatment.
Condolences Pour In
Following the news of his critical condition, prominent Congress leaders, including former party president Sonia Gandhi and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, rushed to AIIMS. The nation was struck with grief as the sad news of Dr. Singh’s demise was announced. Prime Minister Narendra Modi reportedly called Dr. Singh’s family to extend his condolences. BJP National President J.P. Nadda also visited AIIMS to pay his respects.
A Legacy of Visionary Leadership
Born on 26th September 1932 in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dr. Manmohan Singh was an intellectual powerhouse. His academic journey took him through prestigious institutions like Punjab University, Cambridge University, and Oxford University, where he earned accolades as a scholar of economics.
Dr. Singh’s illustrious career began in academia, where he served as a professor at Punjab University and Delhi School of Economics. He later transitioned into key economic roles, including Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (1982–1985) and Vice-Chairman of the Planning Commission (1985–1987).
In 1991, as Finance Minister, Dr. Singh spearheaded landmark economic reforms that transformed India into a global economic power. His contributions earned him the distinction of being appointed as India’s 14th Prime Minister in 2004, a position he held for two consecutive terms until 2014.
