HMPV Virus Cases Detected in India: Karnataka and Gujarat on Alert

India records three cases of HMPV virus, a respiratory disease rampant in China. Babies in Gujarat and Karnataka test positive as health authorities issue guidelines.

HMPV Virus Hits India: First Cases Reported in Karnataka and Gujarat

India has reported its first cases of the Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), a respiratory virus that has been spreading rapidly in China. Health authorities are now on high alert as three cases have emerged in the country—two in Karnataka and one in Gujarat. All the infected patients are infants, raising concerns among healthcare professionals and parents alike.

The virus, known for causing respiratory issues similar to the common cold, has been identified in:

  • Karnataka: An eight-month-old boy and a three-month-old girl tested positive.
  • Gujarat: A two-month-old infant in Ahmedabad has been diagnosed with the virus.

Gujarat’s First Case: Modasa Infant Tests Positive

In Gujarat, the first case surfaced when a two-month-old baby from Modasa was admitted to a private hospital in Ahmedabad. The child, showing symptoms of fever and cold, was subjected to blood tests, which confirmed the presence of HMPV. Despite the alarming diagnosis, doctors report that the infant’s condition is now stable. Officials clarified that the baby had no travel history, minimizing the risk of further local transmission.

Karnataka on Alert: Two Babies Infected

Similarly, health authorities in Karnataka are on heightened vigilance after two infants were confirmed positive for HMPV. The cases were diagnosed following respiratory complications. The state government has begun monitoring potential new cases while advising citizens on preventive measures.

Preventive Measures and Public Guidelines

With the emergence of HMPV in India, health departments in Gujarat and Karnataka have issued advisories emphasizing precautionary steps:

  1. Maintain Personal Hygiene: Regular hand washing with soap and water.
  2. Avoid Crowded Places: Limit exposure in public gatherings.
  3. Use Masks and Respiratory Etiquette: Cover the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing.

Anyone displaying symptoms such as fever, persistent cough, wheezing, or breathing difficulties is urged to consult healthcare providers promptly.

Symptoms and Spread of HMPV

HMPV primarily spreads through respiratory droplets. The infection can easily transmit when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Although most cases are mild, infants, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of severe complications such as bronchitis or pneumonia.

Key Symptoms Include:

  • Fever
  • Nasal congestion
  • Cough and sore throat
  • Difficulty breathing

Government Reassures Public

Despite the confirmed cases, officials urge calm, stating that there is no cause for widespread alarm. Vigilance and adherence to preventive guidelines are deemed sufficient to manage the situation.

India’s health ministry is closely monitoring developments and working on containment strategies to prevent further spread.
